QUINCE (Cydonia oblonga Mill.)

The program of developing new quince cultivars began in 1958, first by clonal selection and later by planned hybridization within the Cydonia oblonga species. Objectives of quince breeding are developing larger, high quality cultivars with smoother skin, less pubescence and small number of grit cells, with soft-flesh, sweet-subacid fruits of extended usage period.
