IBAR

General characteristics

A genotype singled out by clonal selection from a native population of the Ibar river valley, the village of Progorelica. The tree is upright, wide and strong belonging to a group of medium vigorous walnut cultivars. The crown is sparse, pyramidal and widely branched with medium long branches well covered with bearing wood. There are no dry woods inside the crown, which implies that winter frosts make no damage to branches. The bark is grey, smooth all over the trunk and skeletal branches. The shoots are upright, strong, and darker than the skeletal branches. The leaf and wood buds are pronounced, roundish on shoots. Flower buds are large, pronounced, roundish and set at the shoot top. The leaf is compound, odd-pinnate with 7-9 mostly 5 leaflets per rachis. It is large, green, smooth and tapering. The flower is monoecious, belonging in protogynous group of flowers. It is characterized by high pollen production. It flowers moderately late avoiding late spring frosts. The mother tree has high bearing potential. Grafted tree bears fruits early resulting in excellent crop. It is moderately susceptible to the causal agent of walnut anthracnose Gnomonia juglandis and resistant to Xanthomonas campestris (Pierce) Drows.)

Fruit characteristics

The nut is medium large, mostly 2 per a bunch, rarely 1 and 3, roundish-oval (9.56 g average weight, 40.5 mm long, 31.9 mm wide and 30.5 mm thick; shape index amounts to 0.89). Shuck is rather thick, green, ostensibly adding up to the nut size. The shell is wrinkled, light-brown, 2.02 mm thick and with a prominent, well-sealed suture. The shell is firm enough to bear technological finishing of (husking, blanching,). The kernel fills the shell well, separating easily from shell. It has excellent taste and aroma. Average ratio-51.4%, oil content-70.2%, proteins 13.8%. The kernel is typical light yellow, which contributes substantially to the quality of this cultivar.


Ripening time

Ripens in late September-early October. Fruits should be dried upon harvesting as to obtain long shelf life.


Mark

By its economic and biological properties this selection belongs in a group of mid-early flushing cultivars, but owing to superior quality of its kernel and excellent cropping it is recommended for wider growing in commercial plantings.
