VUJAN

General characteristics

A type singled out by clonal selection from the native population in the village of Prislonica situated on the slopes of mountain Vujan after which it was named. The tree is upright, tall and strong. It belongs in a group of vigorous walnut cultivars. The crown is rather upright, tall with skeletal branches at 45° and well covered with fruiting branches on the crown periphery. Practically, there are no dry branches inside the crown of this selection, which implies that low winter temperatures do not damage the branches inside the crown. The trunk and the branches are light ash-grey. The shoots are erect, strong, dark brown. Leaflets and wood buds are pronounced, rounded, covering entire shoots. Flower buds are large, borne on shoot tip. The leaf is compound, odd-pinnate, rarely with 3-5 leaflets on a rachis. It is medium large, with prominent venation, intensely green, acute. The flower is monoecious, protandrous. Catkins are not numerous with pollen shedding preceding stigma receptivity. Due to early flushing, late spring frosts may cause the damage. The mother tree was fruitful. The grafted tree fruits early, giving medium crops. It is susceptible to Gnomonia juglandis and moderately resistant to Xanthomonas campestris.

Fruit characteristics

The nut is large, 12.04 g on average. Dimensions: length - 37.4 mm, width - 32.4 mm, thickness - 31.3 mm, shape index - 0.93. It is rounded at the top and slightly flat at the bottom. The shell is rather smooth, hard, light ash-grey, 2.5 mm thick, tightly sealed and with an even suture. The kernel is often damaged when cracking due to pronounced solidity of the shell. The nut is suitable for mechanized finishing. The kernel is of excellent quality, filling the shell well. It also has excellent shelling quality. Kernel ratio is 48.6%, oil content 66.2%, proteins 16.1%. The kernel is yellow, which is typical of this cultivar.

Ripening time

It ripens in the first decade of October. Fruits should be properly dried upon harvesting as to obtain solid shell and long shelf life.

Mark

By its economic and biological properties this selection belongs in a group of early flushing cultivars, which does not recommend it for wide growing in commercial plantings.
